The hill overlooking the village, El Fuerte, was the scene of the final battle, and defeat, of the Axarquia Moors in their rebellion of 1569.

On top of the hill are a few remains of the old fort from which it is said that many Moors threw themselves from it rather than be captured by the Christians.

The village is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets lined with white-washed houses and best explored on foot. Do be warned though, most of the streets are steep and some of them are very steep. Small, dark alleys often lead to a bar or restaurant!

The incident occurred at 23:45 on Thursday and Guardia Civil officers from Nerja are investigating to try and ascertain whether the fall was accidental or as the result of being pushed by someone.

At the time of the incident, thirty year-old F.J.N. had been involved in a ‘discussion’ with a family member and was also apparently intoxicated.

The injured man suffered back and spinal injuries in the fall.

The government argues that the water supply is not a profitable venture for the Council and is better in the hands of private enterprise, as has happened in several neighbouring municipalities (Nerja, Torrox, Vélez-Málaga), as they can provide, for example, a 24-hour breakdown service.

In addition, it will allow the redeployment of a number of Council workers to other duties.

The Mayor dismissed arguments that the privatisation of the water supply would lead to price increases, pointing to the other local municipalities where privatisation has occurred and where there have been no subsequent price increases.

It must be said, however, that these privatisations have all been fairly recent.

The successful bidder will assume control of the water supply for a period of 25 years, paying an initial €600,000 to €800,000 and an annual fee of €0.15 per cubic metre of water billed. This will earn the Council between €40,000 and €50,000 per year.

There are those who argue that the primary motive for such privatisations is, in effect, a back-door loan and a revenue earning scheme rather than it being primarily for the benefit of the residents. And who can blame them for this attitude when such schemes only crop up during a financial crisis?

Users will now have access to prescriptions (Receta XXI) and will be able to make appointments with a doctor or pediatrician via the internet or by using an sms message…Salud Responde…

The system also means that the medical history of a patient can be accessed, with the permission of the patient, in any health centre in Andalucia where the software is installed. This in turn means that each doctor will have access to the same, up to date, information.

The PSOE criticise the decision to privatise these utilities, an action that will bring in revenue of €600,000 this year. They say that for many years the Council has been selling off municipal plots to the highest bidder, making more than €2,255,000 in the process, yet owes around €600,000 to suppliers.

The PSOE contends that such actions are purely for electoral or other interests, a means of obtaining quick cash, and are not in the best interests of the municipality of Frigiliana.

The campus, which has grown over the years, will bring together around 180 people between the ages of 8 years and 18 years. Marc Gasol will be ‘on campus’, as it were, on the 6th, 7th and 8th July.
