Welcome to Frigiliana

frigilianaSeven kilometres north of Nerja, perched high on a ridge in the Almijara, Tejeda and Alhama mountains, is the picturesque town of Frigiliana, undoubtedly one of the best of the typical Andalucían ‘White Villages’.

The hill overlooking the village, El Fuerte, was the scene of the final battle, and defeat, of the Axarquia Moors in their rebellion of 1569.

On top of the hill are a few remains of the old fort from which it is said that many Moors threw themselves from it rather than be captured by the Christians.

The village is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets lined with white-washed houses and best explored on foot. Do be warned though, most of the streets are steep and some of them are very steep. Small, dark alleys often lead to a bar or restaurant!
